Dive In! New Braunfels & Gruene: The Ultimate Family Day Trip from San Antonio

|
November 11, 2025

Living in the Greater San Antonio area means you're never far from a fantastic weekend escape. For a blend of Texas history, refreshing river fun, and family-friendly attractions, look no further than New Braunfels and its charming historic district, Gruene.

At Joseph Creek Homes, we love seeing our families build memories. Here is your guide to making the most of a day trip to this iconic Hill Country destination, less than an hour from your new home!

The Plan: History, Water, and Sweet Treats

1. Start with the Classics: Gruene Historic District

Begin your day in Gruene (pronounced "Green"), a beautifully preserved 19th-century German town on the Guadalupe River.

  • Gruene Hall: Snap a picture outside the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas. Though you might not catch a show in the morning, the history is palpable.
  • Shopping & Strolling: Browse the unique boutiques, antique shops, and local artisan stores housed in the original historic buildings. It’s a low-key, beautiful walk.
  • Fuel Up: Grab an early lunch at the famous Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar, perched right above the Guadalupe River. The views are just as good as the food!

2. Afternoon Adventure: River or Waterpark?

Depending on the season (and your family's energy level), you have two world-class options:

  • Summer Thrills (May-September): Schlitterbahn Waterpark: This massive park, often called the "World's Best," offers endless water fun. It cleverly uses the natural river water to power many of its rides and tube chutes, offering a unique, natural waterpark experience for all ages.
  • Year-Round Relaxation: Landa Park: This 51-acre park is a local gem. Landa Lake, fed by the Comal Springs, is cool and clear. You can rent pedal boats, take a ride on the miniature train, or just enjoy the excellent playgrounds and walking trails. It’s a perfect spot for younger children.

3. Sweet Endings: A Taste of Germany

Before heading back to your Joseph Creek Home community, stop by Naegelin's Bakery.

  • Established in 1868, it’s the oldest bakery in Texas.
  • Pick up a traditional strudel, a famous pfeffernusse (spiced cookie), or a delicious slice of cake to enjoy on the drive home.

Why We Love New Braunfels

This town is the perfect example of the rich culture and adventure available near our communities. It offers historic charm, incredible natural beauty, and modern entertainment, making it a versatile and easily accessible destination for every family.
