From SATX to the Coast: The Perfect Weekend Beach Trip to Port Aransas

|
April 28, 2026

There is something special about the transition from the rolling hills of San Antonio to the salty air of the Gulf Coast. For those of us living in the greater San Antonio area, the "island life" is closer than you think. One of the greatest perks of a Joseph Creek Home is its strategic location—you can leave your driveway in the morning and sink your toes in the sand within three hours.

Whether you are looking for a mid-summer escape or a quiet fall retreat, Port Aransas (or "Port A") is the quintessential Texas beach town. Here is a practical 3-day itinerary to help you make the most of your coastal weekend.

Friday: The Easy Drive & Sunset Vibes

The drive from San Antonio to Port Aransas is a straight shot down I-37, typically taking about 2.5 to 3 hours.

  • Arrival & Golf Carts: Once you cross the ferry or come up through Padre Island, do as the locals do: rent a golf cart. It’s the primary mode of transportation here and the best way to feel the ocean breeze.
  • Check-In & Beach Walk: Head straight to the shoreline. Put your toes in the sand and take a long walk along Port Aransas Beach to shake off the car ride.
  • Dinner with a View: Grab a table at Virginia’s on the Bay or Trout Street Bar & Grill. Watching the boats come into the harbor at sunset is the perfect way to start the weekend.

Saturday: Sun, Sand, and Adventures

Saturday is all about embracing the "Salt Life."

  • Morning Beach Setup: Drive your golf cart (or your truck) right onto the sand. Set up your canopy, fly some kites (check out Fly It Port A if you forgot to pack yours), and enjoy the morning waves while they are at their calmest.
  • Mid-Day Nature Break: If you need a break from the sun, visit Roberts Point Park. It’s a fantastic spot for dolphin watching from the pier, and the kids will love the playground and open green spaces.
  • Lunch Like a Local: Craving a delicious burger (and maybe an island drink)? Stop by Lelo's Island Bar. (You can even catch the score on that big game!)
  • Afternoon Activity: For a bit of adventure, book a Red Dragon Pirate Cruise—a hit for families—or take a short boat ride over to San Jose Island for some of the best shelling on the Texas coast.
  • Treat Yourself: Swing by Bron's Shaved Ice for a snow cone and explore the local boutiques in the town center.
  • Photo Op: You can't visit Port A without getting a photo in the opening of a fiberglass shark mouth. I suppose you can... but where's the fun in that? (There are a few of these shark mouths around town. Try the ones located at the entrances to Destination Beach & Surf or Bo Jon's Surf & Gifts.)

Sunday: Slow Mornings & One Last Dip

Before you head back to the Alamo City, squeeze every last drop out of the island.

  • Breakfast of Champions: Fuel up at a local favorite like Coffee Waves and take some pastries to-go for a beachside breakfast.
  • The "One Last Swim" Ritual: Head back to the water for a few hours. There’s something therapeutic about a final dip in the Gulf before the drive home.
  • Lunch at the Marina: Grab a casual lunch at the Sip Yard before hitting the road. With several walk-up window restaurants to choose from, your picky eaters are sure to find something to satisfy their cravings.
