Viva Fiesta! Crafting the Perfect DIY Fiesta Wreath for Your Home

Fiesta San Antonio is more than just a festival; it’s a vibrant explosion of culture, heritage, and community that transforms the city every April. For those of us who love the "Modern Texas Hill Country" aesthetic—blending rustic textures with bold, festive energy—nothing welcomes the season quite like a custom-made Fiesta wreath on your front door.
Whether you’re decorating a new Joseph Creek home or adding flair to your current space, this DIY guide will help you create a show-stopping piece that captures the spirit of San Antonio.

Phase 1:Gathering Your Supplies
To get that authentic, over-the-top Fiesta look, you’ll want a mix of traditional Mexican folk art and modern floral elements.
The Foundation:
- Wreath Base: A 24-inch grapevine wreath(for a rustic feel) or a wire frame (for a cleaner look).
- Tools & Adhesives: A heavy-duty hot glue gun and plenty of glue sticks; zip ties, floral wire or pipe cleaners; scissors.
The "Fiesta" Flair:
- Paper or Faux Flowers: Look for bright, multi-colored flowers in varying sizes.
- Miniature Accents: Mini piñatas, tiny sombreros, maracas, or even colorful cascarones.
- Ribbons & Textiles: Serapes (woven blankets) or high-quality wired ribbons in fuchsia, orange, turquoise, and yellow.
- Greenery: Silk succulents or vibrant poppies to fill the gaps.
Phase 2: Where to Shop Local
San Antonio has incredible resources for authentic décor. Support local businesses and get the"real deal" items here:
- Fiesta at North Star: Located near NorthStar Mall, this is a one-stop shop for authentic Mexican imports. You can find handmade paper flowers, mini sombreros, and official 2026 Fiesta medals to pin onto your wreath.
- Fiesta On Main: A legendary spot for papel picado, textiles, and larger-than-life ornaments that give your wreath professional scale.
- The Pearl Farmers Market: Often features local artisans who sell handmade floral picks and unique Texas-inspired embellishments.

Phase 3: Step-by-Step Instructions
1. The Anchor Piece
Start by choosing your "statement" item. This could be a large paper flower, a mini piñata, or a small sign. Secure it with floral wire and/or hot glue.
2. Layer Your Ribbon
You do not need to cut the mesh ribbon before doing this style of wreath. Attach one end of the mesh to the wreath using the pipe cleaner to just twist around it. Twist on a pipe cleaner every few inches around the wreath, alternating between the top row and the bottom row. “Weave”your mesh ribbon along the wire frame loosely to allow for plenty of volume in your wreath, connecting the ribbon to the pipe cleaners as you make your way around the circumference. Once you make it all the way around, connect it to the same pipe cleaner you started with and then use scissors to snip the mesh (see photo 1). Repeat the process with another color, weaving in an opposite direction than the first color to give volume and variety to the wreath (see photo 2). Add one more color of mesh ribbon (see photo 3) to complete your base. [Note that you can use zip ties or floral wire in place of pipe cleaners.]
3. Layer Your Flowers
Work from largest to smallest. Lay out your biggest flowers around the wreath base first. Don't be afraid to let them overlap; Fiesta style is all about abundance! Fill in the smaller gaps with silk poppies or succulents. Once you are happy with the placement, use a hot glue gun to secure them in place.
4. Add the Extras
Use pipe cleaners or floral wire to secure your heavier items like maracas or a mini sombrero. Tucking a few cascarones (confetti eggs) into the floral clusters adds a playful, traditional touch that feels uniquely San Antonio.
5. The Ribbon Streamers
For that classic "streaming" effect, cut 5–7 lengths of different ribbons (about 12–18 inches long). Secure them to the bottom-center of the wreath base so they hang down elegantly. Mix up the ribbon widths and vary the patterns for that eclectic look.
6. Optional Finishing Touches
Add a few 2026 Fiesta medals to the ribbons for a bit of "bling" and local pride.
Pro-Tip for Hill Country Homes
If your home features limestone or natural wood accents, try mixing in some dried pampas grass or succulents with your bright paper flowers. This softens the neon colors and ties the festive look into the natural Texas landscape perfectly.
